Intelligent BESS Commercialization & Flexibility Trading

Together with Electrohold Trade, we are implementing a co-location project with over 2.9 GWh of battery storage capacity – one of the largest of its kind in Europe. Starting in Q4 2025, we took over the commercial flexibility monetization and trading of the capacities on the energy markets. The project demonstrates how scalable storage solutions can become a cornerstone of a sustainable and economically viable energy infrastructure.

A 48 MWh container-based large-scale BESS in Grevesmühlen, built from new vehicle batteries, combines economic efficiency with resource-conserving circular economy. Leveraging our years of BESS optimization experience and proprietary algorithms, we maximize profitability while minimizing battery degradation through intelligent flexibility monetization and market trading.

Since 2018, together with integrator EATON, we have been replacing diesel generators with a 3 MW battery system powered by 148 second-life batteries from Nissan Leaf vehicles, while also enhancing grid stability across Europe. With a capacity of 2.8 MWh, the system stores energy from 4,200 solar panels and serves as an emergency power supply during major events, including football matches and concerts. In the meantime, the batteries are marketed on the energy markets.

Together with Mercedes-Benz Energy as system integrator, GETEC Energie, and Enervie, a former coal power plant in Elverlingsen was transformed into a "living spare parts warehouse." As early as 2016, a storage system with 2,000 battery modules and 29 MW of power was put into operation and prequalified for primary control reserve (PCR). In 2024, its lifecycle was extended by another five years. In total, more than 900 Daimler batteries are available for commercialization at several locations across Germany.

In collaboration with the IFES Institute for Energy Storage, under the direction of renowned Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Sterner, the project represents a leap forward in storage technology: Two Fenecon Industrial L storage systems in co-location with a solar plant near Regensburg. The flexibility of the storage system is made available to short-term and balancing power markets.

Our algorithm-based FlexibilityTrader optimizes real-time BESS optimization and flexibility monetization for TESVOLT large-scale battery storage systems. Automated trading decisions on spot and balancing energy markets maximize revenues while supporting grid stability. This collaboration demonstrates our expertise in automated flexibility trading of virtual assets, delivering tangible value to asset owners.

Through terralayr’s flexibility platform, we gain fast access to virtual battery storage capacities that we can flexibly scale and trade across various markets. As a "Designated Optimizer," we not only handle the commercialization of available capacities but also ensure that unsold capacities are still traded on the markets. This way, we guarantee asset owners a minimum level of market revenue.

In cooperation with Brandstätter Solarpark GmbH & Co. KG and Fenecon, a 10 MWp solar park has been supplemented with a 14 MWh BESS. The Mobility House Energy optimizes and monetizes the storage capacities on the energy markets.

This project demonstrates how intelligent storage integration can future-proof existing PV systems – all realized in less than a year from concept to commissioning.

Several storage systems consisting of over 1,800 vehicle batteries with a total capacity of 70 MW were implemented at four locations in collaboration with storage manufacturers FENECON and NIDEC. These systems were marketed using a multi-market trading strategy across various power and energy markets in Germany and France.

Together with Audi, a six-month field study at the EUREF Campus in Berlin investigated the market potential of aggregated electric vehicle batteries. In the first half of 2022, each battery generated annual revenues in the four-figure euro range. The goal was to demonstrate the revenue potential of electric vehicles in short-term electricity trading on the EPEX Spot under real-world conditions. Since 2022, VG1 and V2G pilot projects have been conducted in a real-world laboratory.
